Charles M. Washam

September 27, 1946 — May 17, 2025

Moberly

Charles “Charlie” M. Washam, 78, of Moberly, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

He was born on September 27, 1946, in Salisbury, Missouri, to Raymond Edward and Mary (Allen) Washam. He married Verna (Garner) Washam on February 28, 1964, in Callao.

Charlie started working at the Moberly Police Department and eventually became a lieutenant. Charlie continued his career as the Chief Deputy for the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, and he also spent many years at the Walmart Distribution Center. Over the years, he took on many jobs and was never afraid to learn something new or lend a hand.

He enjoyed fishing (especially fly fishing at Bennett Springs State Park), baking pies and bread, and making his well-known peanut butter fudge. He was always working on a project, quick to help with anything that needed fixing, and known for hosting a great fish fry. His grand-dogs could always count on a side-by-side ride with him.

Charlie is survived by his sons, Jerry (Charity) Washam and Jim Washam, both of Moberly, MO; grandchildren, Lydia (Chandler) Tennyson, of Kansas City, MO, Amanda (Jared) Best, of Marceline, MO, Bethany Washam, of Columbia, MO, and Ethan Washam, of Moberly, MO; three sisters, Anita (Washam) Henderson, of Clifton Hill, Janet Vaughn, of Billings, MO, Nancy White and sister-in-law Connie (Garner) Lessley, of Moberly.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Verna Washam; his parents, Raymond Edward and Mary Washam; his stepfather, Eldon “Bud” Gesling; his sisters, Evelyn Spellman and Katherine Reed; brothers-in-law, Lavelle Henderson, Jack Reed, and Garland Lessley.

Charlie will be remembered for his sense of humor, his steady presence, and how much he cared for the people in his life. His family takes comfort in knowing he is now reunited with his wife, Verna.

Cremation was provided by Pathway-Millard Family Funeral Chapel in Moberly, Missouri. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Charlie will be laid to rest beside Verna at Fairview-McCurry Cemetery, north of Salisbury, Missouri.
