Clete Garrott, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away leaving behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and deep devotion to those he loved.
Born on January 26, 1945, in Jonesboro, Illinois, to Wallace “Wally” Garrott and Arlene Hartline, Clete grew up with a strong sense of family and love that would shape the rest of his life. He graduated from Desert High School and went on to earn a degree in History from Southeast Missouri State University, a subject he carried with quiet pride and lifelong curiosity.
Clete was a gifted athlete in his younger years, especially on the baseball field, where his talent earned him numerous awards and recognition. He also served his country honorably in the United States Army, a chapter of his life that reflected his dedication and strength of character.
On January 10, 1985, Clete married Virginia Waterfield in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together they built a life centered on love and shared memories.
Clete had a passion for coin collecting and could often be found carefully admiring and organizing his collection. He found joy in the simple things—working at North Village Park and most of all, being with his family. He was happiest surrounded by his daughter and grandchildren, sharing stories, laughter, and having an easy going personality that made everyone instantly love him.
Clete had a way of making people feel special. He affectionately called everyone “kiddo,” a small but meaningful reflection of the love and familiarity he extended to those around him. His laughter was constant, his kindness genuine, and his presence unforgettable.
Clete is survived by his daughter, Ashley Smith (Brady); his cherished grandchildren, Caroline and Oliver Smith; and extended family members of the Hough, Garrott, and Winston Hartline, along with many friends whose lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace “Wally” Garrott and Arlene Hartline; his sisters, Carol Rose and Phyllis Lemons; and his beloved wife, Virginia Garrott.
Clete’s life was one of quiet strength, deep love, and enduring joy. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
