Dorothy Ann Woodward

Dorothy “Dottie” Woodward was born on June 22, 1937 in Moberly, MO to Henry A. Schumann and Mary E. (Steinkamp) Schumann. She entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 15th at 11:47 AM, surrounded by her daughters and close family members at Landmark Hospital in Columbia, MO.

Dorothy grew up in Moberly, MO on the family farm with her two younger brothers, Charles and Pete. She attended Immaculate Conception Church in Moberly with her family, where she received all of her initial sacraments. She attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from eighth grade before moving on to graduate from Moberly High School.

One of the most treasured memories of Dorothy’s early childhood was being a “flower girl” at the age of 4 during the celebration of the first Solemn Mass offered by Fr. William Schumann, her uncle and godfather. The Mass took place at Immaculate Conception Church just after Fr. William Schumann was ordained in 1941. She felt especially connected to her godfather and was overjoyed to be presented with his personal gold rosary at the time of his death in 1953. She kept the rosary close to her and used it throughout her life until her own great nephew, Fr. Benjamin Armentrout, was ordained to the priesthood in 2021. At that time she presented the rosary to him as a gift following the celebration of his First Solemn Mass. Dorothy’s early religious experiences and devotion to prayer set the tone for a life of deep faith and trust in Jesus Christ, which she desired to share with all of her family and the people she met along the way.

After elementary school, Dorothy attended Moberly Junior College for two years, then went on to nursing school at Avila College near Kansas City. There, she met her future husband Dennis Woodward while shopping at a local record store. They were married at St. Pius X in Moberly on June 1, 1963. They moved to Beaver Creek, Ohio where they established their permanent home and raised two daughters. They were faithful, active parishioners at Ascension Catholic Church in Kettering, Ohio. After working many years as a registered nurse, Dorothy retired and enjoyed traveling with Dennis. Their retirement travels took them to Florida every year, as they were especially fond of winters spent in the warmer climate. Throughout her life, Dorothy and her family made regular trips home to Moberly to spend time with her mother while she was still living, and her brothers, their wives and their families.While Dennis was living, they also made regular trips back to Kansas to visit Dennis’s family and friends there. For the past 3 years, Dorothy made the move back to Moberly to live out her final days. Dorothy happily returned to her St. Pius X Church family and enjoyed participating in the Mass and attending various gatherings with old and new friends.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her mother-in-law Ella Woodward, husband Dennis, brother Charles H. Schumann, Sr., sisters-in-law Erma (Pete) and Rhonda (Charles) Kay (Woodward) Kintner, brothers-in-law Gaylon Kintner and John Crow; and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by her brother Pete (Carolyn) Schumann of Moberly, her sister-in-law Faye (Woodward) Crow , Debbie (Woodward) (Steve) Myers, her daughters, Denise (Jeff) Smith, and Diane (Chris) Thomas, grandsons Josh (Ashley) Wolf and Zach Wolf, all of Ohio, her godchildren: Kenny Schumann, Chuck Schumann, Dot (Schumann) Shannon, Addie Schumann, and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Moberly, MO. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 10:40 a.m., followed by the Rosary at 10:40 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Moberly.

In lieu of flowers, Dorothy requested that memorial contributions be made to: Society of St. Vincent de Paul, or St. Mary's Cemetery, 209 South Williams Street, Moberly, MO.
