Jerry Lee Thornton, 74, of Higbee, Missouri, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2026, in Columbia, Missouri.
Jerry was born on November 10, 1951, in Columbia, Missouri, to Joseph Franklin and Thelma Maxine (Winn) Thornton.
Jerry worked as a heavy equipment operator for the City of Columbia for over 20 years, known for his strong work ethic and dependable nature. Jerry enjoyed fishing and loved spending his Springs and Summers at Bennett Springs. He also loved hunting, and if it could be hunted—he did it. Jerry valued time with the people he loved and enjoyed getting together with friends, playing guitar, and always finding a way to place a bet—whether it was on a football game, a scratch-off ticket, or the slots at the boat.
Most of all, Jerry was funny, had a big heart, and truly never met a stranger. He made people feel like family, and his door was always open. It wasn’t unusual for Amanda and Casey’s friends to walk in without knocking, head straight to the fridge, fill their bellies, and curl up on the couch for a nap—even if Amanda and Casey weren’t home. Jerry had a way of making everyone feel welcome, safe, and loved.
Jerry is survived by his children, Amanda Crutcher and Casey Thornton, both of Higbee; his grandchildren, Michael Addison, Brayden Thornton, Haidyn Aldridge, and Hailee Aldridge, all of Higbee; his sister, Lisa Bazel, of Newbury Park, California; his sister-in-law, Brenda Thornton, of Columbia; along with many cousins, and dear family friends.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Franklin and Thelma Maxine Thornton; his younger brother, Roy Thornton of Columbia; and his best friend of more than 40 years, Steven “Murk” Graves.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 23, 2026, at his home. Friends and family are welcome to come and share stories, laughs, and memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family is setting up a family expense account. Those wishing to contribute may contact the family directly, and additional details will be shared soon.
