Richard “Rich” Allen Center, 71, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away on August 13, 2025, leaving behind memories, laughter, and the love of his family and friends.

Rich was born on March 20, 1954, in Springfield, Illinois, to Cecil and Dorothy (Sullivan) Center. He grew up in Springfield alongside his sister, Connie, and graduated from Springfield Southeast High School in 1972. Soon after, he completed Heating and Air Conditioning training in Indianapolis, Indiana, beginning a path of hard work and dedication that would define much of his life.

Over the years, Rich worked for Louis Planck Interior Construction and later owned and operated Center’s Phillips 66 Service Station at the corner of 11th and Ash — a place where many came not only for service but also for his company and humor. He eventually found his calling as a Springfield Firefighter, a role he held with pride, courage, and a deep commitment to helping others. His years as a firefighter were some of his proudest.

Beyond his work, Rich was known for his quick wit, charm, and ability to bring a smile to anyone’s face. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and all who knew him will likely never forget his humor, warmth, and charm.

Rich loved the outdoors — whether it was fishing, spending an afternoon on the golf course, or simply enjoying the fresh air. He had a special place in his heart for animals, caring for them with the same tenderness he gave to those around him.

Above all, Rich cherished his family. He is survived by his fiancée, Joyce Graham; his daughter, Ashley (Bill) Brokop of Lancaster, SC; his son, Richard Allen Center of Fort Collins, CO; his sister, Connie Blake of Springfield, IL; and his three beloved grandchildren, Wesley, Betsy, and Abby Brokop. His parents, Cecil and Dorothy, preceded him in death, and he now joins them in eternal rest.

Rich’s family and friends will remember him as a man of humor, resilience, and deep love — someone who could light up a room with his presence. His legacy lives on in the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the bonds he created. May God richly bless all that read this!
